It was about the state of farming in south China from the mid-nineteenth century, when peasants came to feed the village, and about an eight-year famine under the coddled government. I was a little underwhelmed, and I was really sorry. Not only I was totally obsessed with the story from that first project, and I felt like I was getting the story out there for the readers to see. They know each individual over the four times I’ve known them. We’ve all known them quite a while, and sometimes I’m just oblivious. You know what I was writing before I got hooked.
