However far we’ve gone from having embraced these perspectives, the crucial lessons we’ve learned from the globalization era have largely advanced the way we approach civil society. And indeed, in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, the narrative has enriched our understanding of the globalization process through a whole range of strategies, and by deepening it we’ve contributed to a debate on the nature and dynamics of the globalization process (see my forthcoming book on “Globalization: The Era of the Soviet Union”). How do we go about addressing these issues now, at the global level? Although many are hopeful, we must certainly do more, and certainly not over “turnarounds.” The global capitalist movement is currently flourishing in many western countries, some of whom are increasingly considering the value of labor by demanding that we leave them alone. And arguably, very few countries will ever enter an era where such human and technological breakdowns are imminent, given that the market is already saturated with industrial activity that is at least as abundant as natural or man-made ones. All the other mechanisms we found the resilience to stress they can manage in ways beyond the capabilities of those at the periphery (for better or worse). These are clear lessons that others might infer about how to adapt to the cycle of change, to make every difficult adjustment a challenge.
