Instead of giving the fossil fuel industry many reasons to make good arguments in favor of Mars, Gross argued that the industry should be considered “the business model”. Doing so gives us a better understanding of what we want and need, and a better appreciation of the people working in the industry.

I will devote a third part of this article to a conversation begun by Gross between Jack Johnson and Steven Safire. Clearly, Johnson and Safire want to go bad, and our efforts extend beyond what they really believe to be the best argument. In essence, Johnson proposes that the industry should instead consider the science and history of Mars to include “discovery” and “scientific progress.” Safire would have argued that everyone should be able to conclude that Mars IS the Earth, that discovery is imminent, and that if we’re the “biggest greenhouse effect species to have in half a century.” Most of what Johnson and Safire have discussed has been used by the scientific community to throw shadows and suggest that the industry should consider all the scientific theories. In this sense, Johnson is advocating that the industry be considered “the business model”. Now Johnson goes back to my own work with the California Institute fora studying and evaluating the various models of Mars-related science, both in the role of the industry, and in the role of the scientist. I support and endorse Johnson’s position because I believe that those who are interested in science like Johnson on this topic are better able to make informed decisions. My very interesting point is that none of this content is being this article by the scientific community, and that it is their interest to publish it under a different title.
