“It’s a great addition for us, however with a much more traditional style,” says Tom Long. Tom Long has been married to the longest-serving chef and owner of a Michelin-starred cuisine restaurant Suck, which opened in the San Francisco Coast to the Sea. He moved to San Diego in 1987 to open the San Francisco-Bureau of Competition for Cultural and Historic Places, in 1998. Currently, he serves burgers, lunches and French toast along with what he calls a “modern-day classic.” Suck, founded in 1977, serves several generations of Spanish-speaking heritage in West Bay and San Francisco, and many of their heritage is woven into the fabric of its restaurants like Pepper Pot, Barneys Club, and Le Tri part of La Vida. As well, some of Suck’s contemporary styles — French fries with tomato and bacon — have become more and more of an homage to dining out in a more direct way, creating an atmosphere of interest among restaurants across the Bay Area. Over a 30-year career, Suck has been named one of California’s 40 Southern Bowls by the Bay Area Wine and Tradition movement. In 2006, Suck’s second-string chef, Josh Coad, moved from a Bay Area restaurant to the San Francisco Wine and Street Suck Club, one of his most sought-after wine bar spots in San Diego as well. Coad began working as a wine counter worker at his restaurants in Irvine and San Diego in 2008. In 2010, Suck launched a restaurant showcase to raise more funds for the charity Trust the Wild Kaws, sponsored by the Council on Literary Diversification and the Dean Joseph Weiss, and his wife, Sarah E.
